Agricultural Meteorology Community of Practice

What is this Community about? Agriculture, including crops, livestock and fisheries, is arguably the most vulnerable sector to climate variability and climate change, with over 90% of the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) of developing countries indicating the need to support adaptation in agriculture. Weather and climate play a crucial role in agricultural productivity, food security, and rural livelihoods. Agricultural meteorology (Agrometeorology) provides essential information to help farmers, policymakers, and researchers make informed decisions on crop and livestock planning, water management, and risk reduction, thereby making agriculture more resilient to climate variability and change.

This Community of Practice is a hub for sharing knowledge, innovations, and best practices in agricultural meteorology and the application of climate services in the agriculture sector. By fostering collaboration between meteorologists, agronomists, and agricultural decision-makers, this CoP aims to improve climate resilience in agriculture.

What do we do together?

Through this platform, we:

  • Exchange knowledge, good practices, and case studies on weather and climate services for agriculture.
  • Share tools, models, and methodologies for agrometeorological monitoring and forecasting.
  • Discuss approaches for climate risk management in agriculture.
  • Identify opportunities for organizing training sessions, expert discussions, and seminars related to agricultural meteorology.
  • Connect different stakeholders to enhance the application of climate services in the agriculture sector.
  • Share opportunities related to professional development and partnership on climate services in the agriculture sector.

Who can join?

This community is open to agricultural meteorologists, applied meteorologists, agronomists, climate scientists, social scientists, farmers, policymakers, and professionals working in agricultural extension, food security, and rural development. Whether you develop climate services, use them, or research their applications and benefits, we invite you to be part of this network.
